The Facts

Without Legs
Mountain Of Garbage
Fact 1: Millions of families live on less than $1 a day.
Living on only a couple dollars a day...
Rowena Canales is holding one of her nine children. Her family lives in the small shack which is pictured behind her.
Rowena's husband is a farmer. The family of 11 lives on less than $1.60 a day. With very little money, her children's future seem bleak.
Open the doors of opportunity and
give her children hope for a better future.
Fact 2: 1.5 million children live on the streets,
many work or beg to survive.
Often times you will find children begging along the streets of Manila. Many are asking for food so they can fill their empty stomachs.
Many who watch this tend to ignore the kids fearing that giving one food will bring dozens of children at their feet.
These kids have no future... but you can give them hope for one.
Fact 3: More than a third of children drop out of
school by the sixth grade.
Many families are faced with one thing: provide their child with an education or live without basic necessities for the rest of the family.
With most families living on less that $1 a day, this can be a tough decision.
Many children want to continue through school... they just don't have the opportunity.
Our Children
Our sponsored children are very special to us. We take great pride in the children we've chosen
for our Sponsor A Child program. Our founder personally visited every child and their home,
even speaking with their parents. We know these families on a personal basis now and we
hope to help every child by providing them with a chance for a better future.
Here is a personal story of Marilyn Donato who is a 13 year old girl filled with hopes and dreams
like everyone else. She failed to tell her parents what she wanted to become because she knew
she was 'too poor to dream'. Our founder wrote about her in our blog.
Too Poor To Dream:
"I was in near tears today as I went house to house talking to the
parents of our sponsored children.
I am so adamant about sponsoring the right children and providing
help to those kids that really need it. Thats why I visited the childrens
families.
One thing I learned is that all the children I visited today deserve it.
I went to the home of Marilyn Donato. Her family lives in a small home
made out of cement blocks. Her parents raised 9 children, Marilyn is the youngest child at 13
years old.
I asked her parents what she wanted to be when she grew up and through translators, they
said she has no plans. You see, all her siblings graduated high school but they were too poor
to send any of them to college. The hopes of a better future disappeared. They dont dream
because they cant. All of Marilyns siblings live in the small town tending to the rice lands, simple
farmers too poor to dream for a better future."
Bernadette Hermogeno is one of five children living in a small shack made out of bamboo. Her
mother tends to the five children while her father farms rice crops. He has medical issues and
isn't able to go to the doctor because he doesn't have the money to go. They struggle every
day.
The Story Of Bernadette:
"I didnt realize how much change we are providing for children until I went around visiting the
families of those sponsored kids. As Ive said before, I was in near tears going from home to
home. I finally realized how much impact $18.00 could do for a child and her family. This money
is not just an opportunity but it could mean changing the course of the familys life forever.
Imagine being thirteen again What were you
doing? At this age, girls should be playing with
dolls, starting to talk about boys and just living
a carefree life with hopes and dreams to be
anything they want to be.
For 13 year old Bernadette Hermogeno, she
wakes every day next to her parents and five
brothers and sisters. They live in a small one
room shack made out of bamboo (locals here
call it a bahay kubo). Their kitchen consists of
a fire pit and they get their water from a nearby
pump. The family is so poor, the family lives on
dirt floors. This family is the poorest Ive seen amongst
the children so far.
Her dreams to be anything she wants to be are limited. They simply dont have the money to
provide for her future. Bernadettes mom works doing laundry and her dad is a farmer. They
live on less then $1.00 a day supporting the family of 7.
Driving by, most people would simply overlook the small rural town. It is merely a dot on a
big map. But within this dot are many children like Bernadette who deserve a chance to hope
again, who deserve a right to freely live their life without limits. This type of freedom is what we
take for granted in America. The types of opportunities are endless for us. Look at your life
through the eyes of Bernadette Shouldnt she have endless opportunities? Shouldnt she be
allowed to dream, to get out of poverty?"
